Canavan disease information, advice and facts
Canavan disease is an inherited disorder that causes progressive damage to nerve cells in the brain. This disease is one of a group of genetic disorders called leukodystrophies. Leukodystrophies are characterized by degeneration of myelin, which covers the phospholipid layer of neuron insulating the axon. What research is being done on Canavan disease?
The gene for Canavan disease has been located. Research and diagnosis includes studies to understand how the brain and nervous system normally develop and function. These studies contribute to a greater understanding of gene-linked disorders such as Canavan disease plus the causes and symptoms and have the potential to open promising new avenues of treatments.
